A Caregiver’s Guide to Dental Health for the Elderly

May 30, 2022

There are countless challenges faced by caregivers of the elderly. In addition to helping older adults with their physical and medical issues, the senior citizens’ dental health must be attended to. In fact, other health problems—such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes—may germinate or worsen in a person whose mouth doesn’t receive proper care.

When you or anyone else in your family needs a dentist, we at the office of Brightway Dental, PC are dedicated to providing the topmost level of superior and empathetic care. We are experts at making all of our patients—from children to adults—feel comfortable during their visits.

Older people can be especially susceptible to cavities, gum disease, root decay (if gum recession exposes them to bacteria), broken teeth and dry mouth (it ups the chances of tooth decay. Full dentures and partial dentures must also be monitored, as they can break, become uncomfortable and be a safety hazard.

With all of those possible scenarios in mind, here are some symptoms for which a caregiver must be on the lookout. There’s a good chance that even one of them will require a dental visit. Early detection usually means easier treatment.

  • Difficulty opening his (or her) mouth.
  • Pain or puffiness in his neck, face and mouth.
  • Mouth sores, swelling or growths.
  • Ill-fitting dentures or partials.
  • Gums that are inflamed, sore or bleeding.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Pus between his teeth and gums.
  • Teeth with areas that are dim or tarnished.
  • Loose natural teeth.

Because people’s oral health becomes more vulnerable as they age, it’s vital that caregivers show extra vigilance with their charges. They should also observe how well their “patients” carry out their basic dental routine of flossing and brushing their natural teeth, as well as cleaning their dental appliances. Many elderly people have difficulties maneuvering floss and toothbrushes.

Feel free to discuss any of your concerns or observations with the person’s dentist, who can help you better oversee the challenges you face.
